Nevada's gubernatorial race is entering its final stretch with diverging signals about the likely outcome. Incumbent Republican Governor Joe Lombardo faces Democratic challenger Aaron Ford, the state's attorney general, in an election that will shape policy for the nation's largest gaming market.

Prediction markets have shifted dramatically in Ford's favor since early October. On both Kalshi and Polymarket, Ford now holds odds above 75%, reversing a position where Lombardo was favored through August and September. However, traditional polling presents a murkier picture. MS NOW shows Ford with a slim 45%-44% edge, while a Noble Predictive Insights poll from October 6 gave Lombardo a 42%-40% advantage. Recent elections have demonstrated that both polling methodologies can diverge significantly from outcomes, as evidenced by polling misses in the 2024 U.S. presidential race and Brazil's 2024 elections.

The gaming industry's financial preferences are unambiguous. Lombardo has attracted substantially more direct campaign contributions, raising $6.1 million between January and September compared to Ford's $4.9 million. More significantly, gaming-affiliated donors have funneled millions into pro-Lombardo political action committees. Nevada Way PAC alone has received over $10 million, with major contributions from Station Casinos ($3 million), the Fertitta brothers ($1 million each), Las Vegas Sands ($1 million), and substantial donations from Boyd Gaming, Caesars Entertainment, Wynn Resorts, MGM Resorts, and numerous other operators.

Lombardo's appeal to gaming stakeholders reflects his business-friendly regulatory approach. As governor, he has directed state gaming regulators to eliminate outdated rules and streamline compliance requirements. His campaign rhetoric has emphasized protecting gaming industry interests, with a comment at an August rally that he must "take care" of the "gaming billionaires" fueling employment drawing criticism from Ford's campaign, particularly as energy costs have risen.

Ford's support base differs dramatically. He has secured backing from Nevada's influential Culinary Union Local 226 and other labor organizations, which have contributed approximately $3 million through the Forward Nevada PAC. Ford has positioned himself as pro-worker, supporting unionization efforts at Station Casinos' Red Rock Casino after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the company's appeal.

From a regulatory standpoint, Ford's office has taken an aggressive stance on prediction markets. As attorney general, Ford has championed Nevada's ban on trading contracts related to sports, entertainment, and elections. His office successfully defended these restrictions in an August Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling, preserving what Nevada characterizes as the "gold standard" for gaming regulation. This regulatory posture may concern certain industry segments while protecting traditional casino interests from perceived threats posed by prediction market platforms.

Nevada's political history suggests gaming industry preferences have historically aligned with electoral outcomes. The state elected Republican governors exclusively from 1998 through 2018 before Democrat Steve Sisolak won in 2018, largely due to pandemic-related casino closures that lasted 78 days in 2020. Lombardo defeated Sisolak in 2022, and now faces a closer-than-expected challenge. The gaming industry's overwhelming financial support for Lombardo reflects confidence in his regulatory approach, though prediction market signals suggest voters may prioritize other issues as the race concludes.
