For a long time, TAB and Lotto were the only local online options, and that is still the case for online casinos: none holds a NZ licence yet. SkyCity runs an online casino, but it does so on an offshore Malta licence, the same as the overseas sites.

That is now changing. The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 received Royal Assent in April 2026 and creates a regulated market of 15 licences, with the NZ Gambling Commission as regulator and the DIA administering the licences.
