Microgaming is known for bringing lesser-known variants of classical casino games online and has hit it big with Spanish 21.

The most interesting feature of Spanish 21 is that the natural tens are removed from the each of the eight decks. Hence each deck used consists only of 48 cards. Tens are very important cards in online blackjack because along with the jacks, queens and kings they constitute an important component of the blackjack hand that pays 3:2. With the tens out of the reckoning the chance of drawing a blackjack reduces significantly. Unfortunately for this reason many online players give this game a skip without going through the rules.

Spanish 21 compensates online player handsomely for the loss of the tens. Not only is the playing field made level but it is also made more interesting. First and foremost ties at a value of 21 do not push. A player's value of 21 wins over the dealer's 21. A player's 21 also opens a number of payouts not offered in classical blackjack. These are in addition to the even money payout of winning the hand. If a player achieves this using 5 cards he gets a payout of 3:2, if he does so using 6 cards the payout is 2:1 and if he does it using 7 or more cards the payout is 3:1. A 6-7-8 combination or a 7-7-7 combination in a mixed suit pays out at 3:2, in the same suit pays out at 2:1 and in spades pays out at 3:1. And this is not all. There is a Super Bonus that pays a fixed amount if the player holds a suited 7-7-7 and the dealer holds any 7. This amount is $1,000 for bets of less than $25 and $5,000 for bets of $25 or more.

The other rules are also relaxed in Spanish 21. Players can split any cards up to four times. The players can double on split hands. The players can surrender after seeing their dealt cards and lose only half their bets. Doubling is also permitted on any hand. There is another unique rule in Spanish 21. Player can surrender a doubled hand any time before busting by forfeiting half the wager.

Microgaming offers two versions of Spanish 21. One is Spanish Blackjack, which plays very much like its land casino format without the online frills. The other is the Multi-Hand Spanish 21 Blackjack. Online players can play up to five hands simultaneously in this version. What is more interesting is that this game can be played in the Expert Mode. This mode allows the player to feed in a strategy and allow the computer to play a preset number of games automatically. Multi-Hand Spanish 21 Blackjack can be played at the following Microgaming online casinos: Music Hall casino, Blackjack Ballroom, Roxy Palace Casino, Ruby Fortune Casino and First Web Casino.
