Between 65% and 70% of the games offered at online casinos are online slot games. Software technology has advanced to such an extent that playing online slots has become a pleasurable experience in itself. Using graphics, animations and sound effects online gaming software developers create very realistic environments for online slot games. Contemporary slots have many features that provide additional avenues for payouts. New players should have at least a basic idea of the different types of slots on offer.

Broadly slots are classified into three groups classic slots, video slots and progressive slots. Classic slots are so called because they resemble the old fashioned mechanical slot machines. These slot games have only three reels as the mechanical slot machines had. Many of the classic slots found in online casinos also feature the symbols that were popular with mechanical slot machines. These include stars, horse shoes, Liberty Bells and the fruit symbols like cherry, lemon and orange. Usually they have very simple payout structures with certain defined combinations of symbols paying out as specified in a payout table.

Most of the slots fall into the category of video slots. When land slots switched over from physical spinning of reels to simulation using a random number generator, many video elements were included in the software and hence the name. Structurally these slots have five reels, sometimes more. They have a large number of paylines, which in some cases goes up to 100. The video slots have a large number of features that makes the wagering more exciting because there are more avenues of payouts. Some of the more common features are discussed below. One important feature is the "wild" symbol. Whenever this symbol appears on the reels it can substitute for most other symbols. This greatly increases the chance of hitting a winning combination. Today it would be difficult to find a video slot that does not offer a wild symbol. Another important feature is the "bonus round". These are two types of bonus rounds. One is that which offers free spins. In these players are not required to place wagers but receive the payouts. The other type of bonus round offers random credits by asking the players to make choices like picking objects.

Progressive slots actually can be of the classic slots type or the video slots type. They are classified separately because they have a jackpot whose amount keeps on increasing till it is hit. A part of every wager adds to the jackpot total. When a player draws the jackpot winning combination then the entire jackpot amount is his. There are progressive jackpot slots that pay out in millions of dollars and have changed the lives of several players.

When games get up to 100 paylines as mentioned as some do in this article I think it becomes too much. I mean I like games with more paylines but 100+ paylines is kind of ridiculous and just a way really IMHO for online casino software providers to show off and to more importantly be the first to show case games with a large amount of lines.

Definitely... I think that players that come to casinos what to kick back, relax and enjoy playing without stressing out about making decisions. In slots games all the decisions are made for you even though they may not seem like it on the surface especially with things like bonus rounds when you make a selection but at the end of the day each of these options are designed in such as way that the average always (100% of the time) works out so that the house has at least a 6 - 18% advantage in the game. It's a lot different with games like blackjack where there are decisions that need to be made.

It really makes sense why slots games are the most popular they are by far the easiest game to play at casinos you just sit in front of a machine in land based casinos or in online casinos in front of your PC and simply push a button. Nothing really changes. Even if there's bonus rounds in the game it's still much easier to play then most of the other games that have more rules involved then simply placing your bet and hitting the spin button or bet max button.

There's no doubt that video slots games are far more popular these days. This applies to both slots games found in land based casinos as well as online casinos. Three reel slots are definitely being phased out and I think with good reason. They're boring as hell and don't offer nearly the same kind of stimulation that you get while playing video slot games. If you're not convinced and would like to expereince playing some of the best slots games online I suggest that you check out and play at a Wizard Gaming or Microgaming powered online casinos. Also if you're in a land based casino I highly recommend that you check out and play some of the WMS slots games such as their new Monopoly game which is incredible.

Slots games offer an escape from the need to think and allow players to sit back, relax and enjoy without the stress of worrying about other factors like in blackjack, craps and roulette. Personally this is one of the main reasons why I play and I'd assume that there are several other people that are like me and enjoy a worry and stress free gaming expereince.
