The National Basketball Association is taking aggressive action to combat sports betting-related integrity violations by imposing significant restrictions on player proposition wagering. The league has instructed its authorized sportsbook partners, DraftKings and FanDuel, to cease offering specific bet types effective immediately, marking one of the most comprehensive regulatory interventions the sports betting industry has seen from a major professional league.
The targeted restrictions focus on wager categories deemed highest risk. The NBA is eliminating parlays that combine multiple under bets on a single player's statistics, a product directly implicated in recent player gambling scandals. Additionally, the league is banning first-basket, first-3-pointer, first-rebound, and first-assist markets, along with opening-tip outcome bets and wagers predicting whether players will miss specific shots. Under bets on players expected to see fewer than 12 minutes of game action are also prohibited.
These restrictions emerged from concrete evidence of betting manipulation. Jontay Porter, who played on a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud after deliberately leaving games early in January and March 2024 to facilitate winning under bets on his individual statistics. Federal prosecutors documented an $80,000 parlay placed on Porter's combined under bets with a potential payout exceeding $1.1 million. Porter faces a maximum 20-year sentence, though guidelines suggest a substantially shorter term, with sentencing currently scheduled for December 10, 2026.
Terry Rozier faces separate criminal charges for allegedly collaborating with gamblers while playing for the Charlotte Hornets in March 2023, leaving a game early to enable bettor profits on his statistical unders. Rozier has pleaded not guilty, but the allegations underscore a systemic vulnerability in how player prop bets can be exploited.
Beyond bet restrictions, the NBA is implementing a multi-layered enforcement and education framework. The league will require all players, coaches, and training staff to attend mandatory, in-person gambling education sessions beginning this season. The organization is simultaneously launching an artificial intelligence-powered monitoring platform designed to detect and investigate unusual betting patterns across NBA games. These technological and educational components represent a recognition that enforcement requires both reactive investigation capabilities and proactive player awareness.
Player protection extends to harassment prevention. The NBA has upgraded defenses against bettor-related abuse following increased complaints from players and coaches. Athletes can now opt into programs that identify and remove harassment and threats from social media platforms. The league is also revising its fan code of conduct to explicitly prohibit betting-related harassment.
The restrictions will expand to Women's National Basketball Association games beginning in 2027, indicating the league views these safeguards as foundational to its competitive integrity across all professional play.
These interventions reflect a broader industry tension: as sports betting expands and sportsbooks proliferate, the surface area for manipulation grows proportionally. The NBA's action suggests that league-operator collaboration and aggressive product restrictions may become standard rather than exceptional as regulatory frameworks mature.
