MGM Resorts International's third-quarter 2026 results reveal a casino operator navigating mixed market conditions, with weakness in its largest domestic market offset by strong performance in Macau and improving digital operations.
The operator reported $4.2 billion in total revenue for the quarter ended September 30, representing a 1% decline year-over-year. More concerning was the 20% drop in adjusted EBITDA to $403 million from $506 million in the prior-year period, signaling margin compression across the portfolio. The company posted a net loss of $17 million, an improvement over the $285 million loss in Q3 2025, but the EBITDA contraction suggests underlying operational challenges.
Las Vegas, which generated $2 billion in quarterly revenue, bore the brunt of these pressures. The segment's revenue fell 2% while adjusted EBITDAR declined 12% to $531 million. Average daily room rates dropped 8% to $218, and revenue per available room fell 8% to $193, despite maintaining stable occupancy at 89%. Management attributed the rate pressure to higher airline fares and fuel costs, which have made the Las Vegas destination more expensive for leisure travelers since mid-2025. This dynamic underscores how external macroeconomic factors - particularly transportation costs - can constrain pricing power even in a destination with consistent demand.
However, Las Vegas gaming operations provided a meaningful counterbalance. Casino revenue on the Strip climbed 8% to $488 million, driven by improved slot performance and strong high-end table action. Additionally, MGM secured over 500,000 convention room nights during the quarter, exceeding internal expectations. Management indicated that October was tracking better with stronger convention activity, and the company expects benefit from major sporting events and other entertainment properties in the latter portion of 2026.
Macau emerged as a bright spot. MGM China revenue grew 5% to $1.1 billion, reaching a record 17.1% market share despite overall casino gaming revenue in Macau declining 3.8%. Higher visitation, improved gaming results, and enhancements to premium gaming areas drove performance. Hotel occupancy at the two properties reached 94.1%, up from 93.5% a year prior. Adjusted EBITDAR fell 7% to $264 million due in part to increased branding fees paid to the parent company, but the market share expansion demonstrates competitive positioning.
MGM Digital operations also showed improvement, with revenue of $184 million, up 6% year-over-year. The adjusted EBITDAR loss narrowed significantly to $4 million from $23 million in Q3 2025. BetMGM, the company's sports betting and iGaming brand, contributed meaningfully with net revenue up 7% to $710 million in the quarter and adjusted EBITDA more than doubling to $86 million. Management reaffirmed 2026 net revenue guidance for the digital segment at $2.9 billion to $3.1 billion.
Looking forward, MGM is advancing its Osaka integrated resort, with construction approximately 11% complete and the project on track for a 2030 opening, representing significant capital allocation toward long-term regional expansion.
From a CasinoAdvisor perspective, MGM's results highlight a widening divergence between mature North American markets facing demand and pricing headwinds and growth markets where market consolidation and visitation trends favor established operators. The 8% decline in Las Vegas average daily rates, despite stable occupancy, suggests that while foot traffic remains resilient, pricing elasticity is constrained - a dynamic that may persist if transportation and leisure-travel economics remain elevated. Conversely, the company's ability to grow Macau market share in a declining overall market demonstrates the competitive advantages scale and brand strength provide in international markets. For investors and industry observers, MGM's performance serves as a bellwether for how legacy casino operators are managing the transition between legacy property reliance and digital revenue contribution.
