The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has approved one of its largest recent international marketing investments, committing up to $1.45 million to capture Australia's high-value tourism market as Qantas prepares to introduce nonstop air service between Sydney and Las Vegas.

Qantas will operate three weekly flights from Sydney beginning December 29, 2026, through March 12, 2027, using Boeing 787 Dreamliners with seating for up to 300 passengers. The seasonal route eliminates the five-hour advantage previously required for connecting flights through Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Vancouver, or Dallas. LVCVA President and CEO Steve Hill highlighted that Qantas has not added a new U.S. destination in approximately 15 years, underscoring the significance of this expansion.

The LVCVA's board unanimously approved hiring GTI Tourism PTY, a Sydney-based agency that previously represented Las Vegas in the Australian market from 2014 to 2020, to manage the campaign. The initial contract covers $475,000 in fiscal year 2027, with optional extensions of $475,000 in FY 2028 and $500,000 in FY 2029.

Australia represents Las Vegas' second-largest overseas market after Canada, with 275,000 Australian visitors in 2025 generating an estimated $442 million in economic impact. The destination's international recovery has lagged behind domestic tourism since the pandemic, making established high-value markets increasingly critical for sustained growth.

The marketing campaign will emphasize sports tourism, a demonstrated draw for Australian travelers. The strategy ties promotional efforts to major early-2027 events including the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix and the National Rugby League's opening games at Allegiant Stadium on February 27, 2027. The NRL matchup will feature teams including the Melbourne Storm, Wests Tigers, Parramatta Eels, and Gold Coast Titans.

If the campaign succeeds, Las Vegas stands to experience meaningful increases in Australian visitor volume from late 2026 through 2027, with spending distributed across hotels, restaurants, entertainment, attractions, shopping, and gaming properties. The timing aligns with Qantas' confidence in the route's viability and Las Vegas' strategic positioning as a premium destination for international high-spend tourists.

This investment reflects broader industry dynamics where long-haul international capacity directly influences destination competitiveness. By securing air access and backing it with targeted marketing support, Las Vegas creates conditions favorable for sustained visitation from an established market segment historically comfortable with high per-capita spending patterns. The success of this model could inform future LVCVA strategies for other geographically isolated but affluent markets.
