Insomniac to Revitalize Historic Las Vegas Rock Venue with $30M Investment

Clark County's Redevelopment Agency has allocated $10 million to support Insomniac's acquisition and renovation of the Sahara Event Center, located at 800 Liberace Avenue in Las Vegas' Commercial Center. Insomniac is committing an additional $20 million of its own capital to the project, bringing the total investment to $30 million. The effort aims to modernize the venue while preserving its role as a cultural landmark in the surrounding Commercial Center district.

The Sahara Event Center occupies a unique place in Las Vegas music history. Built in the 1960s as the Ice Palace to host the Ice Capades and a semi-professional hockey team called the Las Vegas Gamblers, the venue became an unlikely concert hall during rock music's golden age. When major casinos and the Las Vegas Convention Center refused to book acts associated with youth culture and counterculture movements, promoters converted the ice rink by laying plywood over the frozen surface, then filling it with standing-room audiences within fire code limits.

Between 1969 and the mid-1970s, the Ice Palace hosted landmark performances by some of rock and reggae's most influential artists. Carlos Santana and his band opened for the Grateful Dead's Las Vegas debut on March 29, 1969. Bob Marley and the Wailers performed there on October 21, 1973, in what remains his only Las Vegas concert appearance. Other notable acts who performed early Las Vegas shows at the venue included Led Zeppelin, Buffalo Springfield, Yes, the Doors, and Steely Dan. The venue's significance lies in providing the only viable performance space for rock acts during an era when the casino industry viewed such music and musicians with suspicion.

As Las Vegas evolved and casinos became more receptive to rock bookings, the Ice Palace underwent successive transformations. It later operated as Playland Skateland before becoming the Sahara Event Center and roller hockey venue. By September 2026, Insomniac had leased the space and temporarily closed it ahead of renovation.

This investment represents a natural extension of Insomniac's Las Vegas footprint, which has grown substantially since the Electric Daisy Carnival relocated from Southern California to Las Vegas in 2011. The promoter has established partnerships with major resort venues including Hakkasan, Omnia at Caesars Palace, and the Marquee Nightclub, which host EDC Week programming in the days surrounding the main festival. The 2027 edition of EDC Las Vegas will run across two consecutive weekends (May 4-16 and May 21-23) at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the first time.

While Clark County has officially earmarked the $10 million, the full transfer of funds remains contingent on finalization of agreements between the county and Insomniac. The partnership reflects broader efforts to revitalize older Las Vegas neighborhoods through cultural investment and entertainment infrastructure.
