The Las Vegas Sphere, which opened its Wizard of Oz experience on August 28, 2025, is introducing a substantial refresh to the 75-minute production, debuting September 25, 2026. The upgrades represent a strategic effort to extend the experience's lifespan and encourage repeat visits from the 3.6 million people who have already seen the original production.
Producer Ben Grossmann articulated the creative philosophy behind the enhancements: 'It's not enough to just recreate the land of Oz. You have to feel like you're inside of it.' This approach acknowledges a fundamental challenge in immersive entertainment - maintaining audience interest in looped content that many patrons experience multiple times.
The updated experience introduces six major additions layered atop existing effects that have run since opening, including tornado winds, swirling debris, fog, haptic seats, fire bursts, falling foam apples, and original-generation flying monkeys. The marquee upgrade involves replacing the 16-foot helium-inflatable monkeys steered by drone operators with new animatronic versions capable of menacing facial and body movements during the witch's attack sequence. The Sphere has not officially detailed the new flight system, though visual evidence suggests overhead line suspension.
Scent integration represents what may be the most psychologically impactful upgrade, despite its subtlety. The production now includes scented scene changes tied to transitions between Kansas and Oz, the hostile orchard, and the poppy field sequences. Research in sensory experience design consistently demonstrates that smell anchors memories more powerfully than other senses, making this enhancement strategically significant for retention and word-of-mouth marketing.
Additional effects include a glitter shower timed to Glinda's poppy-field reversal scene, enhanced hot-air balloon effects with fireworks and thermal elements during Dorothy's departure, scent-infused foam apples (expanding on the original falling fruit feature that has reportedly sold secondhand on eBay for approximately $20 per piece), and drone-operated butterfly effects during the house-crash sequence where the film transitions from sepia to Technicolor.
Notably absent from the upgrades is the 'broomstick ride with a witch' previously teased by Sphere chair Jim Dolan during an earnings call. Industry speculation suggested this would represent an immersive video simulator, likely positioned in the lobby pre-show experience. The feature appears to have been delayed or abandoned, though the Sphere has not offered public explanation.
From a broader casino industry perspective, the Sphere's investment in continuous content enhancement reflects the economics of experiential gaming venues. As competition for Las Vegas tourist attention intensifies among properties offering dining, entertainment, and gaming experiences, reinvestment in flagship attractions becomes essential for maintaining pricing power and visitor frequency. The Sphere's technological sophistication and content refresh strategy position it as a significant draw within the entertainment complex ecosystem, though its performance metrics relative to other Strip attractions remain proprietary.
