Flutter Entertainment, the parent company of FanDuel, is undertaking a strategic reassessment of its prediction market business, questioning whether the venture can generate standalone profits or should primarily function as a customer acquisition channel for future sportsbook expansion. The announcement came during the company's third-quarter earnings call on November 4, 2026, as Flutter chief executive officer Dan Taylor acknowledged that deeper clarity on the economics of prediction markets will emerge in coming months.
FanDuel's prediction market journey reflects the operational challenges of competing in a rapidly consolidating space. When the company launched its prediction market offering in September 2025, it initially partnered with CME for contract delivery. However, Taylor admitted the initial product lacked competitive viability. The company subsequently pivoted to Crypto.com contracts in June, consolidated all sports contracts to that exchange in August, and launched a unified application combining sportsbook and prediction market functionality in September. These changes have yielded measurable gains: FanDuel recorded 119 million dollars in prediction market trading volume during the third quarter, with October activity reaching nearly triple July levels.
Despite this trajectory, FanDuel remains substantially behind established competitors Kalshi and DraftKings in trading activity, underscoring the market's competitive intensity. Taylor noted that customer acquisition costs in prediction markets are considerably lower than in traditional sports betting. However, the lower-margin business model complicates calculation of long-term customer value and spending justification. Flutter views stronger return potential in states where sportsbook legalization appears probable, since customers acquired through FanDuel Predicts could eventually transition to the company's sportsbook platform.
Beyond the core prediction market business, Flutter is developing an auxiliary revenue stream through market-making operations. Taylor projected that FanDuel's market-making business (providing liquidity and pricing contracts on prediction market exchanges) will generate 50 million dollars in revenue and 40 million dollars in adjusted EBITDA during 2026. The company believes its expertise pricing same-game parlays and complex betting combinations provides competitive advantage, particularly in markets involving correlated events.
The prediction market expansion is also creating headwinds elsewhere in Flutter's operations. Chief financial officer Rob Coldrake reported that category-wide marketing spending increased more than 60 percent year-over-year in September and over 50 percent in October, largely driven by prediction market operators competing for user acquisition. Flutter expects marketing intensity to remain at comparable levels throughout 2027, effectively raising the cost of customer acquisition across the broader industry.
This recalibration reflects broader industry dynamics affecting prediction markets, which have emerged as a contested frontier in the gambling sector. The regulatory environment remains unsettled, with multiple pending legal challenges and varying state-level approaches to market authorization. For operators like Flutter, the decision to maintain, reduce, or expand prediction market investment will depend on demonstrating either near-term profitability or convincing evidence of downstream sportsbook customer value.
