Entain is making calculated moves in New Zealand's emerging online gambling landscape by soft-launching BlackRush, a fresh casino brand operating under its ElectraWorks Gibraltar license. The launch represents the operator's multi-pronged approach to the market, which currently includes the FoxySpins brand and a partnership with TAB NZ for sports betting operations.
New Zealand's regulatory environment is undergoing significant transformation. The country's government has approved an online casino market set to launch in 2027, marking a pivotal shift in the nation's gambling ecosystem. The new framework will distribute 15 licenses among operators, with each company permitted to hold up to three licenses and each license covering a single brand. This licensing structure creates both opportunity and constraint for major operators seeking market dominance.
Entain's leadership has demonstrated confidence in New Zealand's market potential, with group CEO Stella David signalling during recent earnings calls that the operator will be uniquely positioned to leverage cross-selling strategies once the online casino market launches. David estimates the total addressable market at approximately GBP 600 million (roughly USD 800 million) annually. Entain currently captures around GBP 200 million of that figure through its existing sports betting operations. The company projects that new iGaming brands could push its market share past GBP 300 million, representing a 50 percent increase in revenue from the jurisdiction.
Entain's organizational response underscores how seriously the group views this opportunity. The operator has created a dedicated New Zealand managing director position, filled by Chris Haigh, to maintain local market focus during this period of regulatory transition. Haigh joins the company's Australia managing director Chris Ward in reporting to Andrew Vouris, Entain's Australia and New Zealand CEO. This reporting structure signals that New Zealand will receive comparable executive attention and resources as Australia, despite the former's smaller current market size.
The BlackRush launch, while technically operating via VPN access to the Gibraltar license, suggests Entain is using this period before full market opening to test brand positioning, player acquisition channels, and platform performance. This soft-launch strategy allows the operator to gather market intelligence and refine its approach before the 2027 licensing window opens.
From a competitive standpoint, Entain's current market dominance in New Zealand sports betting (the operator is the only licensed entity permitted to run sports betting locally) gives it structural advantages heading into the online casino era. However, the 15-license framework will introduce new competitors, potentially fragmenting market share. For Entain, maintaining its estimated GBP 200 million sports betting revenue while capturing meaningful share of the GBP 600 million combined market will require differentiated brand positioning across multiple properties. The BlackRush and FoxySpins dual-brand approach appears designed to target distinct player segments within the same jurisdiction.
