In December 2011 Microgaming released Immortal Romance online slot with a fair amount of media hype. It was structured almost identically to another Microgaming landmark slot game Thunderstruck II. Therefore comparison has become inevitable.

The main difference between these two epic slots is the theme. Thunderstruck II is based on Norse mythology and is a sequel to the earlier slot game Thunderstruck. The four main characters are Norse gods Valkyrie, Loki, Odin and Thor. The characteristics and antecedents of these gods are in the public domain and assumed to be known by the players. The crafting of the symbols, the animations, the audio and the introductory clip have a grandness befitting the gods. Immortal Romance has been introduced as the first slot game of a series that will carry on the saga of intrigue and romance of four characters associated with paranormal circumstances. The characters are Troy, Michael, Sarah and Amber. Since this is a fictional story the detailed bios of the characters are made available in the pay table. The atmosphere created in Immortal Romance is one of eeriness with images of dripping of blood and burning of candles.

Structurally both Thunderstruck II and Immortal Romance are five reel video slots with 243 ways to win. Players can wager up to 10 coins per line and the total bet is 30 times the line bet. Thunderstruck II offers coin sizes of 0.01, 0.02 and 0.05. Immortal Romance offers only 0.01 and 0.02 coin sizes, but it makes up for this in the payouts. The largest fixed line payout in Thunderstruck II is 1,000 coins, whereas in Immortal Romance it is 1,500 coins. The net effect is that the maximum possible payout per spin in Thunderstruck II is 2.4 million coins and in Immortal Romance it is 3.645 million coins. The symbols, though different because of differing themes, bear a correspondence. There are symbols representing the four characters in each legend or saga, there are a few additional thematic symbols and then high value card symbols. The game logo symbol is the wild in each case and doubles payouts. There is a scatter symbol that offers scatter payouts and triggers the free spins. Both slots have a new Microgaming feature called Pay Table Achievements. Any combination achieved by the player turns gold in the Pay Table. There is no additional payout involved. There is a feature that can appear randomly after any spin and turn up to five reels wild. In Thunderstruck II it is called Wild Storm and in Immortal Romance it is called Wild Desire.

The free spins are the defining feature of these two landmark video slots. Again the structure is similar but nomenclatures differ. In Thunderstruck II the name is The Great Hall of Spins and in Immortal Romance the name is The Chamber of Spins. Each character offers a different set of free spins and each time the free spins are triggered the player has to play through the given number of free spins of one character before moving on to the next.
