In online blackjack the player aims to get a hand with a higher value than the dealer's hand. But in the process if the player's hand value goes over 21 he loses.

The first step in online blackjack is to place the bet. The player needs to click the desired chip from the stack and then click on the betting area. This transfers the chip to the betting area. The bet can be enhanced by repeating the process. The amount of the wager is reduced from the player's balance.

The second step is dealing the initial cards. After placing the bet the player clicks on the deal button. Automatically two cards are dealt to the player, which are face up. Two cards are also dealt to the dealer, but one is face up and the other is face down.

In the third step the player makes his moves. In most online blackjack games the software highlights the moves available to the player at any given time and all the player has to do is click on the desired option. After the deal two options are always available to the players. One is 'hit', which means that the player draws another card. The other is 'stand', which means that the player is satisfied with his hand and does not want any further cards. When the player clicks on the hit button, he gets another card. For the sake of the novice players most online blackjack software display the current hand value of the dealer and player. If on getting a new card the player's hand value exceeds 21 he busts and loses his wager. Once the player stands then it is the dealer's turn to play.

In the fourth step the dealer's hand is automatically dealt according to the specific rules of the variant of blackjack being played. If the player wins then he is paid out at 2 to 1.

In online blackjack there are some moves that are not always available to the player. When these moves become available the software highlights them and the player has the option of making these moves in addition to hit and stand. One such move is 'split'. This comes into play when the two cards dealt to the player are of the same denomination. If the player exercises this option then the dealt cards are split into two hands, two additional cards are dealt and a wager equal to the original wager placed for the second hand. The player then plays the two hands independently. Some online blackjack games offer the option of 'double down'. This is exercised when the player feels that he has a hand that has good chances of winning. Double down enables the player to double his original wager but faces the condition that he has to draw one and only one more card.

A blackjack pays out at 3 to 2. A blackjack is a dealt hand with an ace and a ten, jack, queen or king.
