Sports Betting Moves Ahead In The United States

With the Supreme Court of the United States having cleared the decks for sports betting by declaring that PASPA is illegal, a large number of American states have already established sports betting regimes. This item looks at three of the latest ventures.

The state of Mississippi processed is inaugural sports bet on August 14, 2018 at Caesars Entertainment owned Horseshoe Casino & Hotel at Tunica. The sports betting platform was the well-known OpenBet product suite from Scientific Games Corporation. This was followed up with the launch of the platform at Harrah's Gulf Coast in Biloxi on August 20. On this occasion, Chris Armes, Chief Technology Officer for SG Digital, said that OpenBet sportsbook platform provides the next level experiences to sports betting players. It is adaptable to operator requirement and can be implemented with great speed as has been shown in the partnership with Caesars in Mississippi. Keith O'Loughlin, also from SG Digital, said, "This is our fourth property launched in three weeks, and these initial installations are paving the way for amazing revenue growth for our partners…”. Scientific Games' deal with Caesars also includes setting up the sports betting system at its property in Atlantic City, New Jersey, which went live on July 30.

Rhode Island has selected IGT and William Hill to provide sports betting in the state. The contract has been awarded through Rhode Island Lottery for end-to-end sports betting services at the state's licensed video lottery and table game establishments, Twin River Casino and Twin River Tiverton Casino. Sports betting operations are expected to go live by mid-November. The contract is for a period of five years, renewal by mutual consent. Gerald Aubin, Rhode Island Lottery Director, said that with the introduction of legalized sports betting the state will leverage world-class resources to provide the best-possible sports betting experience for the patrons. Rhode Island is the first lottery to set up sports betting operations post-PASPA.

IGT has also received an interim license by the West Virginia Lottery Commission to provide its PlayShot integrated sports betting platform in the state. Casino operators in West Virginia can now decide to partner with IGT to participate in the rapidly evolving U.S. sports betting market. IGT is already a leader in land based and online casino gaming. It is now gaining momentum in pioneering sports betting across the United States. Enrico Drago, IGT Senior Vice President, said that gambling regulators across the country are acknowledging the reliability, security and market-readiness of IGT's PlayShot solution.
