The online gaming software provider Realtime Gaming (RTG) seems to have made the Christmas dark humor genre its own. It began in the Christmas of 2008 with the slot game Rudolph’s Revenge. Then in 2009 RTG released Santa Strikes Back. This year Rudolph again has the upper hand in Return of the Rudolph with a definitely more devilish Rudolph appearing as the wild symbol. The continuous battle between Santa and Rudolph has visibly taken its toll on the gift wrapped high value card symbols that are tattered and torn in this third slot game of the series.

The strength of Rudolph reflects in its being an expanding wild symbol when it appears in reel 3 and triples payouts. In one symbol Santa is tied up to his chair and though Rudolph is free the Elf has to slave it out. A Sleigh without reindeer, a mutilated Teddy Bear and Santa’s vandalized Home are some of the other symbols. The scatter symbol consists of a pair of reindeer Thugs, presumably recruited by Rudolph to do the damage. But players will be wanting plenty of these on the reels because the Thugs are the gateway to the bonus rounds.

When three or four Thugs symbols appear scattered on the reels players have to select one of them to be randomly taken to one of three bonus rounds. In the Rudolph’s Rampage feature the second screen shows Santa’s ransacked toy factory. The player has up to eight picks to rescue the three hidden elves. If the players manage this in the first three picks then they are awarded 50 free spins. If they need all eight picks then they are awarded only 5 free spins. One of the elves will be holding a red, blue or green present. Depending on the color of the present the free spins will offer additional benefits. The Santa Strikes Back feature offers 7 free spins. These can be retriggered up to nine times and each time the multiplier increases by 1. The Rudolph’s Revenge feature also offers 7 free spins but the benefits are different. The payouts are multiplied by two plus the number of Rudolphs appearing on the reels. If this feature is triggered by four scatter symbols then during the free spins the scatters also become wilds. If players get five scatter Thugs symbols in the main game then they win the progressive jackpot.
