Microgaming offers an online craps game called Vegas Craps. One of the more popular set of bets is the Place bets. The Place bets are bets made on the point number winning or losing. In order to correctly understand the Place bets one has to start from the beginning.

The first roll of the dice in a new session in the game of Craps is called a come out roll. There are eleven possible outcomes of the come out roll, which are the numbers from 2 to 12. If the number rolled is one of 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12 then the session ends. If the number rolled is one of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 then the session continues. These numbers are referred to as points. The point number wins if the specified point number is rolled before 7. The point number loses if 7 is rolled before the specified point number. When the player wagers on the point number of winning he is paid out if the specified point number is rolled before 7. If 7 is rolled before the specified point number then this bet loses. The player can also bet on the point number losing. In this case the player is paid out if seven is rolled before the specified point number. If the specified point number is rolled before 7 then this bet loses.

The correct mathematical odds for the point numbers winning are as follows. The correct odds for 4 and 10 winning are 2:1. The correct odds for 5 and 9 winning are 3:2. The correct odds for 6 and 8 winning are 6:5. The casino cannot afford to pay out as per these odds. The casino has to create a house edge to cover its costs and profits. In the normal Place bets the casino offers payouts that are less favorable than the correct mathematical odds. Thus in the longer run it makes money. In Microgaming Vegas Craps the payouts in the Place bets for the points winning are as follows. The payouts for 4 and 10 winning are 9:5. The payouts for 5 and 9 winning are 7:5. The payouts for 6 and 8 winning are 7:6. There is another way of wagering the Place bets for the points winning. This way is called Buy because the player buys the correct odds from the casino by paying a 5% commission to the casino. The casino gets its requirement through the commission and therefore willingly gives the correct payouts. Players are advised to go for the Buy bets because these have the lower house edge.

The correct mathematical odds for the point numbers losing are as follows. The correct odds for 4 and 10 losing are 1:2. The correct odds for 5 and 9 losing are 2:3. The correct odds for 6 and 8 losing are 5:6. In Microgaming Vegas Craps the payouts in the Place bets for the points losing are as follows. The payouts for 4 and 10 losing are 5:11. The payouts for 5 and 9 losing are 5:8. The payouts for 6 and 8 losing are 4:5. The player can get the correct odds from the casino by paying a 5% commission. In the case of wagering on the point numbers losing these bets are called Lay bets. As in the case of the Buy bets, players are advised to go for the Lay bets because these have the lower house edge.

I disagree I think craps is still fun and exciting to play online, however I do think that from the social element standpoint at online casinos it is a bit lacking. The one thing I really like about playing online as opposed to land based casinos is the fact that when you play craps you cane restore previous bets, select pre-defined betting patterns, etc... making it easier to play the game. The same goes for roulette where there are several bets that can be made on various fields of the game.

For me playing craps online doesn't match the thrill and excitement I get when playing craps at land based casinos where you're surrounded by other avid craps fans all cheering and and enjoying the game... I think that craps is a game best left for the land based casinos. I feel the same way about roulette as well though!
