Pai Gow is not based on pattern strategy or sequencing. In Pai Gow you have a hard time coming up with a proper strategy that will win you the game a hundred percent of the time, in fact on average you will win about 46 percent or less on any given day. The casino has a high house edge in this game or we really should say the banker has the house edge. You are also playing against the banker rather than the other players.

To play this game you need to concentrate on the hand you have. This is the best strategy. You shouldn't make a bet if you don't have the proper hands. In other words the cards tell the tale of whether you are going to win or lose.

You should know a few things:

  • The behind hand, which is the five card hand must be higher than the front hand. If the front hand is higher you will foul, which means you lose the wager.

  • You also get the hand that is drawn by the dice. This means you don't get to exchange cards that you don't like.

  • The play is all in the cards that you obtain.

The first thing you will do when you get the cards is create your five card hand. This hand is the most important, because you can't continue play. So if you have a pair, but nothing else then that pair must be in the five card hand. Here is an example of a hand.

Ace, King, King, ten, seven, eight, two

In this hand you have seven cards. The kings are the only hand you have out of all seven cards. This means you have the possibility of winning at least the behind hand. The front hand isn't going to win any thing.

You have two courses of action in this particular hand. You can fold because you can't win both hands or you can decide to play and win the behind hand. The behind hand is a pair of kings, which is the second highest pair you can have. Now the banker could have a pair of aces and win both hands, however it is more likely they have no hand or a lower pair. So in this case it would behave you to continue in the game.

Getting a hand with a pair is usually about 42 percent of the time in any card game. In other words it is rare that you get a higher hand. The only thing that could be worse is the frequency of getting no hand at all. So you are better off playing the pair when it is dealt. In Pai Gow poker the poker hands are going to be the same as any game, this will help in your strategy as well knowing what the hands are. Some individuals don't understand what poker hands will pay out or what the probability is going to be.
