There is plenty happening in the online gambling scene in Europe at the moment and the news is often a mix of good and bad. Fortunately there has been no adverse news in the last few days.
The news from Denmark is about the Prima Networks, which is powered by Microgaming. Prima Networks has managed to establish itself in the recently regulated online gambling market. Prima Networks operates 34 brands, which amounts to 25% of the total number of licenses issued by the Danish Gambling Authority till now. The Microgaming platforms that Prima Networks offers to Danish customers are Flash Casino, Download Casino, Poker and QuickFire. Flash Poker is expected to go live shortly. Loraine Schoevers, director of Prima Networks, said. "The regulation of the Danish market is great for gamers and operators alike and we are delighted to be one of the first software providers in this exciting new territory." Schoevers was sure that as other markets in Europe opened up, Prima Networks would play a lead role because of its reliable and flexible solutions and innovative and entertaining gaming content.
Responsible gambling is one of the key issues in the European online gambling market, with private operators and state owned monopolies both claiming to be the better exponents. In 2007 a responsible gambling solution, PlayScan, was developed by the Swedish gaming monopoly Svenska Spel, in partnership with ICU Intelligence and the Swedish Gaming Institute. PlayScan has now received accreditations from the ISO and the World Lottery Association (WLA). PlayScan meets all the requirements of the ISO 27001:2005 standard as well as 96 additional security requirements stipulated by the WLA, which include 72 lottery-specific requirements. Ann-Sofie Olsson, chief executive officer Playscan AB, said that these certifications demonstrated that PlayScan meets the responsible gambling requirements of the online gambling industry, particularly with reference to security and high level of control. These are very important for PlayScan because they show that it delivers trusty and compliant solutions and services.
The most dramatic online gambling news, however, has come from the German state of Schleswig Holstein. It was almost a repeat of what happened in Washington DC in the United States. Last year Schleswig Holstein has formulated its own online liberal gambling policy, which was applauded by the industry and approved by the European Commission. Converting the policy into law had proved more difficult as the majority needed was achieved by a single vote. The Social Democrats in the opposition tried to bring in fresh legislation repealing the earlier one. The vote took place last week and the opposition failed to secure the majority required to repeal the law by one vote again. Now the Schleswig Holstein state government quickly wants to process the applications and issue the online gambling licenses before the state general election on April 6.
