It is becoming more and more difficult to innovate in the basic game of blackjack. Therefore Microgaming has released a new blackjack game with an innovative side bet. Players cannot wager on the side bet unless they play the basic game. But those who want some additional action can place side bets.

The side bet is simple in construction. It computes the hand value of the first two cards dealt to the player following the usual blackjack rules. The only exception is that an ace necessarily counts as 1. It cannot count as 11. There are three side bets possible. The "Hi 13" wins if the hand value is greater than 13. The "Lo 13" wins if the hand value is less than 13. The "13" wins if the hand value is equal to 13. These bets pay out independently of the base game. The "Hi 13" and "Lo 13" bets pay out at 1 to 1. The "13" bet pays out at 10 to 1. Once this bet is decided the base game continues as usual.

The complete name of this new Microgaming game is Hi Lo 13 European Blackjack Gold. Hence the base game is played under the rules of European blackjack. The game is played with two decks which offers an advantage to the player. The fewer the number of decks the lower is the house edge in blackjack. It is a single hand game with a minimum wager of $1 and a maximum wager of $200. The dealer has to stand on all 17. Players can double down only on totals of hard 9, 10 and 11 and cannot double down on split hands. Splitting is allowed only once and an ace and a 10 value card after splitting does not amount to blackjack. Players can take insurance against dealer getting a blackjack. The payouts in the base game are as usual with blackjack paying at 3 to 2, normal wins paying at 1 to 1 and insurance paying at 2 to 1.

The game is a part of the Microgaming Gold series of table games. This assures that the game comes with excellent features. There are four settings in animated dealing card speeds. Players can enable the Quick Spin option to turn off animations and have the cards dealt instantaneously.
