Go Against the Grain With the Don't Pass Bet in CrapsBy: Adam Baker, Wednesday May 6th 2015

The main bet in craps in the Pass Line bet, and it's the single bet that almost everyone plays, in addition to whatever else they play. However, it's not actually the best way to play in terms of getting the best payout rate. That distinction belongs to the Don't Pass bet. Other than a slightly better payout rate, you'll also get the satisfaction of often winning when most of the players at the table lose if you're playing a multi-player or live game, and that's a lot of fun whether you want to admit it or not.
When you place a Don't Pass bet, it has to be done on the come out roll. On that initial roll, you'll win on a 2 or a 3, lose on a 7 or 11 and push on a 12. If any other numbers come up (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10), then that value is called the point number, and the shooter will roll over and over again until either a seven or the point is rolled. If a seven is rolled first, then you win the bet. All of your wins are paid at 1:1 with this wager.
You'll get a house advantage of just 0.40 percent per roll with this bet, but you can also lay odds when a point is established to raise your effective payout rate. You're basically placing an additional bet when a point is established against the point number coming before a seven. Winning on a 4 or 10 pays out at 1:2, winning on a 5 or 9 pays 2:3, and winning on a 6 or 8 pays a rate of 5:6. All of these bets have a zero percent house advantage.
When you take the average of the zero percent house advantage on laying odds against the point and the 0.4 percent house advantage of the Don't Pass bet itself, then you get a pretty small number. This could actually be the smallest house advantage possible in an online casino game without learning complicated strategies like those in video poker or blackjack, two games that are known for giving players high payout rates with correct play. Taking the Don't Pass bet goes against the grain since most players take the Pass Line bet, but it also gives you great payouts.
