There are differences in the way that games are played online and in land casinos and perhaps the differences are the greatest in craps. The differences do not lie in the bets offered or the payouts but in the mechanics of the game. This article describes how craps is played in land casinos comparing it to online craps where relevant.
The land casino craps layout is divided into three sections. The two end sections are identical and contain the pass, come and field bets, which are the more common bets. The smaller middle area contains the proposition bets. In online casino only one of the end sections and the middle area are displayed on the screen. This is because online casino craps caters to a single player, whereas in land casinos a large number of players wager simultaneously.
Land casino craps is considered the most intimidating game because of the number of casino employees manning the table. In online craps the software is programmed to perform the function of all the employees. The stickman stands at the center of the table. His function is handling the dice. He is called the stickman because he uses a flexible hooked stick. Every new shooter is offered a cache of dice by the stickman, from which the shooter chooses two. After a roll the stickman announces the number thrown and retrieves the dice and returns them to the shooter. The stickman also places the proposition bets for the players.
The boxman sits directly across the stickman. He supervises the game making sure that the payouts have been given correctly by the dealers. The casinos bankroll is placed in front of the boxman and is his responsibility. The boxman also adjudicates any disputes that may arise. There are two dealers, one standing on either side of the boxman. Each dealer handles the monetary transactions at his end of the table. This includes taking chips from the front of the boxman and paying off the winning bets and returning the chips from the losing bets to the boxman. Certain special bets like place bets and free odds bets have to be given to the dealers to be placed. The dealers also handle the pucks used to indicate the establishment of a point. Land casinos have a number of tables arranged in an area known as the pit. In addition to the four employees per table there are a number of floormen in the pit. They supervise the tables and handle credit to be given to regular players. The pit boss is in overall charge of the pit, but he rarely interacts with the players.
In online craps the dice are rolled automatically when the appropriate button is clicked. Some online casino craps games have animations of the player shooting the dice. In land casino craps one of the players becomes the shooter and rolls the dice across the table. He has no advantage in the betting. In a new game the player to the immediate left of the boxman becomes the first shooter and the dice moves clockwise from player to player. The shooter has to bounce the dice off the far wall of the table in order to ensure randomness. In online craps the randomness angle is taken care of by the Random Number Generator of the software.
