The CEO of Swedish gambling company, Svenska Spel, is to leave her office a short 18 months after taking up the post.

The gambling company has announced the departure of their chief executive officer, Meta Persdotter, without offering any reasons for her short term in office or the events surrounding her departure.

Persdotter's departure comes closely on the heels of the departure of the company's marketing director, Tomas Agrell. Agrell was given notice only one week before Persdotter, although the directors of Svenska Spel insist that the two departures are not related in any way. Agrell has already been replaced as marketing director by Peter Jannero. Persdotter's position has yet to be filled; however, while they are searching for a candidate to fill in the place of chief executive officer, Anders Hagg, the company's financial director, is running the company.

Margareta Winberg, chairwoman for Svenska Spel, stated: "Meta Persdotter's mission has been to increase efforts to strengthen Svenska Spel's social responsibility, a task she has carried out successfully and something that will be of increasing importance for the company in the future. During the last year Svenska Spel has also implemented some extensive organizational changes with mixed results. After assessing the whole situation, the Board of Directors has decided to recruit a new chief executive officer for Svenska Spel."

Winberg has suggested that it may take as long as a year to replace Persdotter in her position as CEO. Appointed in January 2009, Persdotter replaced the then CEO, Jesper Karrbrink. Winberg did not reveal many details about the departure of Persdotter, although she was open in admitting that the dismissal of marketing director, Tomas Agrell, was due to the fact that he proved unsuitable for his position.

Regarding the dismissal of Agrell, Winberg commented: "One can truly say that it was a poor hiring decision. He has to go. When one deals with such a large business, sometimes it works well in certain parts and not as well in others."

Winberg admitted that in terms of profits last year, Svenska Spel ended with their third best year ever. This was despite fiercer market competition and their added focus of strengthening gaming responsibility.

She continued on that, "now we have launched this and we will enter a new phase. We think it would be good if a new chief executive officer takes over."
