In previous articles we looked at the game rules and a little on the strategy in which you always raise when you have a pair or higher. In this article we are going to look at the dealer up card strategy for Caribbean Stud Poker. This strategy was created based on the one up card the dealer will show in the game.

There are a set of rules based on this strategy for when you should fold and when you should raise. When you fold you will lose the wager, but if you have not placed the second bet you are safe. In fact you have to fold before the second bet or raise is placed.

Let's look at a few examples of this strategy to see if it will work for you.

  • First say you have a pair. In the last case you were told to always raise, but let's look at the dealer up card strategy. In this strategy you are going to raise based on the up card. The pair you have is tens the other three cards are lower than 10. The dealer has a king exposed. In this hand you will want to raise. The possibility does exist that the dealer has a pair of kings or better. There is also the possibility that the king is alone and doesn't amount to anything. The reason you would raise in this situation is because you have a fairly high pair. Now if your pair was of two's you may rethink raising as that pair of kings is still a possible for the dealer.

  • Let's look at another example: You have a straight. A straight will pay out four to one. The dealer up card is the king. Right there you know the dealer can still play because the hand qualifies. However the king may not yield a better hand. In other words there is a remote chance they have the Royal Flush or Straight Flush. In this case you would raise despite the high up card showing.

  • If you have the royal flush you are always going to raise because the payout is 100 to 1. The chance that the dealer even if they are showing an up card of the king to have a Royal Flush is minimal. In fact even if they do the bet is pushed, so you don't end up making any winnings or losses.

  • There are some that don't believe in the up card strategy. The truth is the cards are dealt randomly. You could end up blowing a win by paying attention to the up card, especially since it doesn't help you figure out the other four cards. It is in effect useless. Still it does have some merit when you look at the pair you have in your hand. A low pair will lose more often than not when you play against the dealer, especially when the up card is higher than your pair.
