After much speculation the New Jersey online gambling bill was signed into law by Governor Christie. Now the processes are on to start regulated intrastate online gambling as soon as practicable. Caesars Interactive, which is the online gambling division of the Las Vegas land casino giant, is first off the block in starting the application process for a New Jersey online gambling license according to a report in the publication Press of Atlantic City.

The news report published a detailed statement of Seth Palansky, a spokesman for Caesars Entertainment. Palansky said that Caesars will offer its complete suite of online casino games other than its World Series of Poker product in New Jersey. It will be the same range that it offers in regulated overseas markets like the United Kingdom. Palansky spoke more about online poker. He pointed out that online poker requires a high level of liquidity and hence Caesars will be signing up as many players as possible in order to make the game more interesting. Palansky was aware that the getting the license would be a long process and that making the application is the first of many hurdles that Caesars Entertainment would have to cross. Palansky likened the introduction of online gambling in New Jersey to the initiation of land based gambling 25 years ago.

New Jersey online gambling licenses will be given only to existing land casino operators. Caesars Entertainment already operates four Atlantic City properties, which are Harrah’s Resort, Showboat Casino Hotel, Bally’s Atlantic City and Caesars Atlantic City. The online casino license application seeks to allow Caesars Interactive to operate online gambling on behalf of all the four casinos.

Caesars Entertainment has been in the news of late for trying to prevent the acquisition of the Atlantic Club land casino by The Rational Group, which owns the online poker operator PokerStars. Caesars has been acting through the American Gaming Association, of which Caesars is a leading member. The Rational Group has officially completed its application for interim casino authorization and has moved one step closer to purchasing the Atlantic Club. Now the New Jersey Division for Gambling Enforcement will investigate and evaluate Rational’s application. Subsequent to that the Casino Control Commission will hold a hearing and rule on whether Rational should receive interim casino authorization. The commission has the discretion to entertain or reject the objections raised by the American Gaming Association. Only after The Rational Group acquires the Atlantic Club can PokerStars apply for a New Jersey online gambling license.

It is believed that Atlantic City land casino operators could be licensed to offer online gambling before the end of 2013, provided by then the regulations supporting the online gambling legislation are published.
