Add On Versus Rebuy Slots TournamentsBy: Shirley Spicer, Tuesday September 21st 2010

In online slots tournaments players are given a certain chip stack and a certain time for wagering with the chip stack. During the slots tournament they may lose all the chips in which case their score will be zero. Or they may end the time allotted with a certain chip balance in which case that will be their score. Slots are a game of luck and the player may run into a losing streak. As a result he may have a nil or a low score and effectively be out of the reckoning for the prizes. Online casinos have tried to formulate methodologies by which they reduce this luck factor. Add on tournaments and rebuy tournaments are the common solutions adopted.
In rebuy tournaments the player can pay a rebuy fee and buy a fresh stack of chips. The distinguishing feature is that the player can rebuy only when he has lost his entire chip stack. In most cases the rebuy fee is equal to the original buy in, except when the tournament is a freeroll, and the purchased chip stack is identical to the original stack. In a freeroll tournament since there is no entry fee the rebuy is specified by the online casino based on other factors. Therefore when a player exercises his rebuy it is like another player participating in the tournament. Hence players with small bankrolls do not really have a legitimate complaint against players being allowed to rebuy. Some online slots tournaments limit the number of times a player can rebuy, whereas others allow players to rebuy unlimited number of times. All online slots tournaments display a leader board. Hence players know the target they are chasing and can take a call on whether it is worth paying the rebuy fee.
Add on tournaments are differently structured. Players are given a starting stack for an entry fee but the time limited allotted is a short span within the overall promotion period. For example the player may be given 30 minutes even though the tournament may span two days. When the time runs out the player can buy an identical chip stack and time period for the add on fee, which is usually the same as the buy in. The original score is not erased. It is added to the score achieved with the add on chips and time. In this way add on slots tournaments allow players to build up their score. The number of add ons allowed are never unlimited. They are specified in the rules of the tournament. Suppose an online slots tournament allows five add ons at the same fee. Prudent players must calculate their investment at six times the entry fee and be prepared to buy all the add ons. Otherwise they will be at a disadvantage compared to other players. If in the course of the tournament a player is so far ahead he could decide to dispense with the remaining add ons. However this would not be a wise move because the add on fee is usually much smaller than the prizes on offer.
Different software providers specialize in different types of slot tournaments. Vegas Technology online casinos are popular for rebuy slots tournaments, whereas Microgaming online casinos are popular for add on slots tournaments.
