Aces and Faces Video Poker Strategy

Aces and Faces is one type of video poker that you can play.  In this article we are going to look at the strategy for this game.  It will help you to understand this game as well as other video poker games that are similar.  Video poker offers you different types of hands that you need to get for a specific payout.  In Aces and Faces you are looking at a game based on jacks or better and five card draw.

This means you need to have at least a pair of jacks in order to get a payout.  You also get to trade out cards.  The initial deal offers five cards and any of those five cards can be turned in for new ones.  The trade out for cards depends on the table below as well as a few other things that relate to strategy.

The table below shows the payout on the hands.  It can help you determine what hands you should try for. The Royal flush pays out the best, but that also has a very low probability.  In other words it is like .0001 percent of the time you can get this particular hand.  The pairs are 42 percent, which means you have a high percentage of getting at least even money when you play.

There are times when you have options to get a better hand.  For example say you have two aces, king, ten, and nine.  You know that you will get a payout for the two aces.  Therefore you will want to keep the two aces and trade in the other cards.  When you turn in the other cards there is a potential for getting a second pair, three of a kind or even a four of a kind.  If you want to try for the two pair you don't want to keep other cards.  You have less chance to get that two pair when you keep a card because you have narrowed your options.  After all if you want to try for the nine as a pair you only have two cards to draw if you keep the nine.  That lessens your chance by one.

In any poker game you never want to give up a winning hand.  If you don't have a winning hand then you can sacrifice whatever cards you choose or even all.  Most tend to keep the highest card in the five card draw and trade out four.  It is in one sense a fair option as you need to get the highest pair you can.
