3 card poker games are very popular at online casinos. They provide some of the excitement of the regular five card games and play extremely fast. This is because they involve a straight comparison of the player and dealer hand without the player having to take any intermediate action at all. Usually they have some sort of bonus side bet.
The leading online gaming software provider Microgaming offers five 3 card poker games in its portfolio. These are listed under Table Games. One can see a development progression from the simplest variant to the most recent one. The basic variant is"3 Card Poker". The game begins with the player placing the Ante bet. The player can also place the optional Pairs Plus side bet. The player is dealt three cards face up and the dealer is dealt three cards face down. The player has to decide whether to Play or Fold. If the player folds he loses the Ante bet and the Pairs Plus side bet immediately. If the player decides to play then a Play bet equal to the Ante bet is automatically placed and the dealer’s cards are turned over.
The next step is to ascertain if the dealer has qualified. The dealer qualifies with a hand of Queen high or higher. If the dealer has not qualified then the Ante bet pays even money and the Play bet pushes. If the dealer has qualified and has a lower hand ranking than the player, then both bets pay even money. If the dealer has qualified and has a higher hand ranking than the player, then both bets lose. There are two bonus payouts. The Ante bonus is paid at 5 to 1 if the player has a straight flush, 4 to 1 if the player has a three of a kind and even money if the player has a straight. The Ante bonus is paid only when the player does not fold and is independent of the main game outcome. Likewise the Pairs Plus bonus is paid only when the player does not fold and is independent of the main game outcome. The bonus pays 40 to 1 for a straight flush, 30 to 1 for a three of a kind, 6 to 1 for a straight, 4 to 1 for a flush and even money for a pair.
The next game in Microgaming’s portfolio is "3 Card Poker Multi Hand" This game is identical to the single hand version, except that the player can play up to five hands against the same dealer hand. Each hand is played independently and pays out independently. Then Microgaming has the single hand version and the multi hand version of 3 Card Poker in the Gold Series. These are simply more elegant versions of the same game. There is a 3D view of the table. Audio has been enhanced through the use of dealer’s voice to make announcements instead of text displays. There is animated chip movement as well.
The latest game is a different game called High Speed Poker Gold Series Multi Hand. The main difference lies in the side bet, which is called Bonus Bet. The disadvantage in 3 Card Poker was that the side bet paid only if the player did not fold. In High Speed Poker the side bet is paid up front before the player decides whether to fold or play. The payout conditions are also different.
