AlixPartners, a business advisory firm, has conducted a new nationwide survey in the United States with some good results for the gambling fraternity. Some of the highlights of the survey are as follows. 35% of active gamblers said they would wager online if it were legal. At the same time only 15% of the active gamblers said they would reduce visits to land casinos if online gambling becomes legal. 57% of the respondents said they are more likely to wager at online run by known land casino brands and 58% said they would be attracted to online casinos that let them earn loyalty points redeemable at land casinos. The good thing for American gambling is that online gambling and land gambling seem to complement each other. The AlixPartners study provides an in-depth evaluation of the factors that influence key gaming-activity decisions, including accessibility, win expectations, customer-service levels and bankroll requirements.

The Gaming Standards Association (GSA) has big name members like Aristocrat Technologies, Bally Technologies, International Game Technology, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and WMS Gaming. It has set up an online gaming committee that has the mandate to consult with industry leaders with the objective of identifying potentially problematic issues and developing a comprehensive framework for technical standards for regulated online gaming.

Former Malta regulator Mario Galea, who is associated with the initiative, said that online gaming required a multitude of standards across the various domains to ensure consumer protection and proper regulatory monitoring. Above all, a unified global communication standard would lower integration costs, increase speed of communication and foster continued technology innovation.

GSA president Peter DeRaedt pointed out that online gaming has existed in some form for more than 18 years, and yet there is no proper understanding of what it is. He also stressed the importance of collaboration. DeRaedt said, “Collaboration must consist of affiliations with existing industry organizations that can then identify partnerships that will move the industry forward. That is the role that GSA has played in the land-based world for more than 15 years, and that is why GSA is uniquely positioned to lead in this area.”

In an independent survey, GSA polled 1,031 adult Americans between January 25 and January 29 who had expressed a general interest in gaming. It examined multiple forms of gaming, including lotteries, race-track betting, sports books, local casinos, destination casinos and online gambling. The survey listed the five most important factors in selecting an online gaming site. These are ease of registering, ease of navigation, lack of wait times for desired activities, availability of options at desired wagering levels and security of financial information and deposited funds.
