Stoney Nakoda Casino in Canada

On June 11, 2008 a new casino was opened in Canada. The Stoney Nakoda Casino was opened with two showgirls and the Chiefs of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. This new casino is located in Alberta and they are hoping for a lot of great things from the casino. The reserve needed to help with the 80 percent unemployment and other economic issues. The new casino is expected to employ those who are out of work and to regain economic stability.

The Chief of Wesley First Nation Clifford Poucette spoke on the opening day about the reasons for the new casino and their hope that the project will rectify some issues. The nations in the reserve spent $65 million dollars to build the new casino and hotel. It is located on the junction of the Trans Canada and Highway 40 from Kanaaskis Country. The chiefs are already employing several of those who were previously struggling. There is housing and social programmes being offered to the Stoney Nation. In fact about 4,000 Stoney's live on the reserve which is 55 kilometres west of Calgary. At least a good portion of these individuals will have jobs with the casino.

Part of the need that drove this new hotel and casino is the fact that the online and gas reserves are drying up. The rights to these reserves belong to the Native Canadians. This is the first in the casino project and once they see the success the others will be completed and opened. The hotel has 111 rooms with an RV campground nearby, an outlet mall, and truck stop. It is the perfect location for all those needing a little entertainment during the evening or on vacation.

There was a little bit of controversy over creating the casino project by some tribal members. A lot of the issues were related to the construction delays and weather. At least part of the issues to come and that are being experienced at the moment is the work ethic. A lot of the members have not had jobs in the past because the opportunity didn't exist. There are some issues about having to earn a living that doesn't sit well.

Currently 80 percent of the positions at the new casino have been filled. There are 300 staff members at the moment and about half are from the Stoneys. The Stoney Nakoda casino feels that they will not have as many troubles as other casinos have with their workers. They feel that they are providing ample training and the operation should see an improvement in six months once these individuals get comfortable with the positions.

Those in charge believe by making the rules clear and following the procedures completely that they can expect their employees to learn and understand what is expected of them. The issues that started early on have been resolved to make the casino a complete success. The games at the casino will be the top games everyone loves to play.
