Today online slot games cannot be conceived without bonus games. Bonus games allow players to win additional payouts without making any investment and are therefore very popular. Two types of bonus games are most common. One is the free spins bonus round in which the player is awarded a number of free spins. The payouts on in those spins get credited to the player's account but the player does not have to place any additional wagers. The other type of bonus game is known as bonus game on the second screen. Here the reels of the slot game disappear and another setting, usually based on the theme of the slot, appears on the screen. Some mechanism is provided for players to earn bonus credits. Occasionally slot games contain a bonus game that is played against the background of the reels but that does not have free spins. Such bonus games are called bonus games on the reels or in game bonuses. Two recent slot releases have this feature thus rekindling interest in them.
The mechanism of the bonus game on the reels is as follows. At the end of a spin there is a triggering event that announces the game. First the existing payouts are credited to the player's account. The reels continue to be displayed. Then that game is played as per the specified rules. Any additional payouts accruing to the player are credited to his account. The player then places the next wager and activates the next spin. There are two types of bonus games on the reels. In one type some of the existing symbols change thus possibly leading to new pay table combinations in active paylines and therefore additional payouts. In the other type the player would be required to make some kind of a choice that leads to bonus credits.
The first type of bonus game on the reels features in a slot game called Butterflies, which was released by Vegas Technology earlier this month. This feature called the Butterfly Feature is activated when the House symbol appears anywhere on the first reel. If there are any payouts these are credited to the player's account. Then in a beautiful animation a butterfly comes out from the house and randomly rests on other symbols. Those symbols are converted to wild symbols usually resulting in additional payouts. After the animation is complete the additional payouts are computed using the same pay table and credited to the player's account.
In April Microgaming released an online slot game called Magic Multiplier. This slot game has the second type of bonus game on the reels. This bonus game is activated when the Curtain symbol appears on the second, third and fourth reels at the same time. This combination credits scatter payouts to the player's account and also any other payouts that may have accrued are credited to the player's account. Then the player is asked to choose one of the three Curtain symbols. The curtains part and reveal a bonus amount. In this game the player may randomly be asked to choose a second Curtain symbol leading to further bonus credits.
Bonus games on the reels are not a new innovation but since they are incorporated only rarely in slot games, players experience a novelty in playing them.
