Microgaming Launches Retro Reels Sequel

When a product like a movie or novel achieves extraordinary popularity the creators are quick to follow up with a sequel so that they can cash in on the brand value created. Microgaming, the leading online gaming software provider, has just done the same thing. In December 2010, Microgaming had launched an online slot game called Retro Reels. Retro Reels acquired instant fame for two reasons. It brought the popular three reel slots symbols like bars, seven and cherry to the five reel video format thus allowing players to get the best of both formats. The more important reason was that Retro Reels had the innovative Re-Spins feature that allowed players to spin a chosen reel keeping others fixed for an additional wager. In January 2011, Microgaming has launched Retro Reels Diamond Glitz, which is near identical to its earlier version.

The apparent difference is a glitzier look created by the addition of diamonds to the background of the reels and a neon sign styling to the slot title. Some of the symbols have been tweaked a bit. Instead of the three different colored Seven symbols, Retro Reels Diamond Glitz had One Diamond, Two Diamonds and Three Diamonds symbols. The Bar, Dollar Sign and scatter symbols have also been given a glitzier and steelier appearance. But the payouts are identical in both slots games. Hence despite these cosmetic changes, where it matters things remain the same.

There are two changes in the structure of the slot games, however. Retro Reels is a 20 payline video slot, whereas Retro Reels Diamond Glitz has 25 paylines. This means that winning combinations will occur more frequently and this is a benefit. But there is no free lunch and this benefit is neutralized in the free spins round. In both slots games each scatter symbol on the reels awards 5 free spins. In Retro Reels the qualifying number is 2 scatter symbols that award 10 free spins. In Retro Reels Diamond Glitz the qualifying number is 3 scatter symbols that award 15 free spins. Therefore in the sequel the advantage of 10 free spins is lost.

Other parameters are pretty much the same. Both slots games have the same coin denomination range, the same limit on the number of coins wagered per payline and exactly the same customization options. The same Re-Spins feature is available in both games. Given the similarities it is puzzling as to why Microgaming released The Diamond Glitz sequel. However, it is there and is live at all Microgaming online casinos. CasinoAdvisor recommends Mummy's Gold Casino, 7 Sultans Casino, All Slots Casino and River Belle Casino.
