Bonus Bet in New Cryptologic Casino SlotsBy: Fabian Rictor, Wednesday December 30th 2009

Earlier this year the leading online gaming software provider Cryptologic signed an agreement with DC Comics to develop online slot games based on their superheroes. This agreement was considered a marketing coup of sorts. Recently the first three branded slot games based on DC Comics superheroes were launched. These were Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman. It was inconceivable that such a high-profile new series of games would be launched without an innovative feature. This innovative feature was the Bonus Bet.
The Bonus Bet is an enhanced version of the Bet Max feature and the Bonus Bet button is located where one would expect to find the Bet Max button, on the bottom right of the screen. By clicking the Bet Max button the player enables all paylines at the maximum number of coins per line. The Bonus Bet button does the same, only it adds 10 additional coins towards the Bonus Bet. The Cryptologic DC Comics slots have 50 paylines and allow players only one coin per payline. Therefore the Bonus Bet activates 50 coins in the regular way and 10 coins for the Bonus Bet, making the total wager per spin equal to 60 coins. Even with the Bonus Bet activated the player can select any coin denomination from those offered and hence the amount per spin in credits can vary. In order to indicate that the Bonus Bet has been activated the Bonus Bet button changes to Bonus Bet Activated and as further confirmation the background to the reels also changes.
The important question is what the player can gain by wagering the extra 10 coins per spin. Each of the Cryptologic DC Comics branded slot games offers a bonus game on the second screen. This bonus game can be triggered only if the Bonus Bet has been activated. Hence if players wager on these games without activating the Bonus Bet they will never get to play the bonus game on the second screen. The Bonus Bet being activated is only an enabling condition. The scatter symbols as required have to appear on the reels with the Bonus Bet activated in order to trigger the bonus game.
The bonus games are very interesting. In Superman the game is Save the World Feature. Superman flies through a shower of missiles let loose by Lex Luthor, winning credits based on how many he destroys. Then Superman reaches the earth and faces three doors. The maximum prize lies behind the door that has Lex Luthor. If the player selects this door he wins 100 times the triggering bet. In Batman the bonus game is called Descent Into Madness Feature. First Batman targets a number of inmates with his boomerang in order to win bonus credits. Then Batman has to trap the Joker. If he succeeds in doing so then the player wins 100 times the triggering bet. In Wonder Woman the Ares Showdown Feature is the bonus game on the second screen. This game involves three face offs between Ares and Wonder Woman. If Wonder Woman wins all three then the player receives a payout that is 100 times the triggering bet.
The more important question is whether it is worth paying 10 coins per spin more, spin after spin, in order to play the bonus games on the second screen. Most players would think that it is worthwhile irrespective of the payouts the bonus games offer. Other players can play the slot games with the Bonus Bet activated in the free play mode and track how often the games are triggered and what they payout on an average and then take a considered call.
